Tall Coreopsis, Tall Tickseed - Coreopsis tripteris

Coreopsis tripteris - Tall Coreopsis, Tall Tickseed. Coreopsis is a genus of 33 species native to the United States, with a species found in every state except Alaska, Nevada, and Utah. Coreopsis triperis is found in 27 states. It is Endangered in Maryland.

While most Coreopsis species are 3 feet tall or shorter, this plant can be 8 or more feet tall. The Tickseed part of the name is because the seed is hard, dark, and flat, looking like the namesake arachnid.

Tall Coreopsis has 8 yellow ray flowers and a brown disk. This is one of the Tickseeds with rounded ray flowers.

The ray flowers of most or all Tickseeds have teeth on their tips; in the case of Tall Tickseed they are very small indentations. The outer bracts of the Tall Coreopsis involucre are very narrow, like little spikes.

The leaves of Coreopsis tripteris have 3 narrow leaflets. The petioles of the opposite leaves join to surround the stem.
